Temperature

Water temperature influences biological activity and growth (e.g., metabolic rate) as well as the water chemistry in streams, rivers, and lakes where these aquatic organisms live. Fish, insects, zooplankton, phytoplankton, and other aquatic species all have a preferred temperature range outside of which, the number of individuals of the species decreases. Even within the preferred range, rapid changes in water temperature (thermal shock) can be detrimental to trout and aquatic life.

Fish Health: As water temperatures increase above trouts’ preferred range (~60oF), dissolved oxygen concentrations decrease making it increasingly hard for trout to breathe until 77oF where concentrations are lethal.

Habitat: Increasing water temperatures favor the warm water species, decrease oxygen concentration in aquatic environments, and shift aquatic chemical reactions.
